He whakataukī: titoro whakamuri, kōkiri whakamua

Look back and reflect so we can move forward.

About Conference 2023

PENZ and EONZ are thrilled to be bringing you the 2023 Hui Taumata/Conference to be held at Rototuna High Schools, Hamilton on the 3-4 July.

Hui Taumata 2023

“Titiro whakamuri, Kōkiri whakamua” is the embodiment of the idea that in looking back we are able to chart of pathway forward. This whakatauki speaks to an understanding that we are our past, present and future. In te ao Māori, the beginning was Te Kore, the Void or Chaos before anything existed, the formless state of potential before anything began.

Out of the many different states of Te Kore, Tō emerged and manifested the long nights.

Finally, whether born between Earth and Sky, Ranginui and Papatuanuku, or pre-existing them, Te Ao Mārama came into being and light came upon the world.

Te Kore may be known in Western terms as the Void or the Chaos, but it is also known to us as the place of pure potentiality.

From this ‘Nothingness’ everything sprang.

Looking back on where we have been and our connection to the present allows us to consider what the future holds and explore the pure potential before us.

We are those who have come before, those with us now and those to come.

Who are we?

Our two organisations are connected together through the Health and Physical Education learning area in The New Zealand Curriculum, that each of the two subjects sit within. Each organisation is the voice and lead agency for their subject at a national level. We offer direct support to teachers, have online platforms for sharing and collaborating, have a credible network of knowledge, provide quality professional learning development opportunities, and are consistently working towards honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Physical Education New Zealand is the national, professional organisation for physical educators. We are a voice for the physical education community, and a credible network of knowledge and information about quality physical education. penz.org.nz

Education Outdoors New Zealand leads, influences and supports education outside the classroom and outdoor education. We support educators to deliver quality learning outcomes within robust good practice systems through PLD, resources, tools, advice and guidance. eonz.org.nz

For your info …

The audience will be mostly secondary school teachers of physical education, health education, and outdoor education, as well as those who research in these fields, provide tertiary education, and those in initial teacher education study, or those who provide educational services and resources to this sector. There will also be Primary and Intermediate teachers attending, and tertiary academic staff. The attendees will be budget holders, programme influencers, or simply consumers of resources and services. They are active on education social media groups, sharing thoughts and experiences of resources, information, tools, and strategies they use. We know that our audience are keen for some face-to-face professional learning and networking after a year of teaching from home and restrictions on their travel a couple of years ago. We are aiming for 400 attendees in 2023.
