PHYSICAL EDUCATION RESOURCES

for primary school teachers

These two books have been designed by experienced physical education teachers as part of the Healthy Active Learning initiative to help primary school teachers to increase their confidence and understanding of physical education in The New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) (Ministry of Education, MOE, 2007).

The books are written as an experiential narrative addressing the reader. Staff could work through the resources individually, as a syndicate group, or as a full staff. Activities and questions will prompt you to reflect on your understanding of the Health and Physical Education learning area and your experiences teaching physical education.

You choose – start with Book One or at Book Two, depending on your understanding of the curriculum area and confidence in teaching physical education.

Understanding Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand curriculum (Book One) covers:

  • commonly held beliefs about physical education
  • the differences between physical education, physical activity and sport
  • what learning in, through, and about movement actually means
  • some contemporary examples of physical education unit planning.

Implementing Physical Education in Practice (Book Two) covers:

  • what quality physical education planning and teaching looks like in practice.
  • what teachers do in other learning areas that can be applied to physical education practice
  • the importance of context, student-centred delivery and quality lesson planning.

The PDFs of both books contain links to audio files, a PowerPoint, and other embedded files.

To access these, download the PDF file and save to your computer THEN open the file in Adobe Acrobat. You should be then able to click through to all the audio files and links within the main resource document.
