The Sir Alexander Gillies Medal

The Sir Alexander Gillies Medal recognises distinguished and outstanding service to Physical Education New Zealand and the profession of physical education. The award is the most prestigious that Physical Education New Zealand can grant and it is awarded rarely for outstanding sustained, career-long services of national or international significance to the profession.

Criteria

The committee charged with making the recommendation for award of the Sir Alexander Gillies medal will take into account the distinguished and outstanding career-long, sustained contribution of the potential recipient. They will also consider the following criteria to aid to their decision making:

  1. The national prominence of the potential recipient. (eg., positions of seniority in the profession: school, tertiary, Ministry of Education, kindred community organizations)
  2. The leadership provided by the potential recipient. (e.g., offices held, presidencies, CEO roles, leadership of national and/or international initiatives such as policy development, curriculum development, course development and research projects)
  3. The scholarly and academic contribution of the potential recipient. (e.g., contributes to the field of knowledge by being active in publishing and dissemination of research and scholarly documents)
  4. The international standing of the potential recipient. (e.g., invitations to present guest lectures, workshops and/or keynotes, invitations to contribute book chapters, editorial roles, invited to review research and other proposals)
  5. The contribution of the potential recipient to Physical Education New Zealand. ( e.g., contribution to the on-going welfare of Physical Education New Zealand, offices held, influence on knowledge and practice of physical education in the school, tertiary sector and/or the wider community)
  6. The status and contributions of past recipients. (e.g., a level of consistency and comparability is essential)
  7. The national /international mentoring of physical education colleagues (e.g., mentoring and supporting colleagues with advanced degrees, research initiatives, publications, professional and teaching competence, and into leadership positions).
Nomination details

A nomination for the Sir Alexander Gillies award should be submitted to Physical Education New Zealand, by a collective of three individual members of Physical Education New Zealand, and in rare cases an individual.

The nominator(s) should provide a comprehensive statement (max 1500 words) that reflects the seven criteria in explaining why the nominee in their view is worthy of being awarded the Sir Alexander Gillies Medal of Physical Education New Zealand.

The nominee’s recent curriculum vitae (CV) should also be uploaded.

In addition to the statement, a written endorsement by a non-member of Physical Education New Zealand can be included with the nomination.
