The COVID delay has meant that the expiration of current Achievement Standards will occur in the same year as the new Achievement Standards will come on board.

New ‘NCEA Education’ website

The MOE has confirmed the launch of an “NCEA Education” website at the beginning of November 2020. This will be a ‘one-stop-shop’ for all things NCEA and merges the content currently found on TKI and NZQA material websites.

Teacher Only Days

Teacher Only Days will be provided to all schools to support the implementation of the new Achievement Standards. Regional days are being planned across the country in November.

In 2021, there will be three more Professional Development Teacher Only Days:

  • May – focusing on literacy and numeracy as well as related Mātauranga Māori information as part of the RAS (school-based)
  • August – a ‘Jumbo Day’ where subject discipline teachers will meet in regions to look over the Level 1 Achievement Standards
  • November – local curriculum design work (school-based) and how to make local adaptations to assessment for our local community. An introduction to the level two Achievement Standards

The Ministry of Education will provide details of the NCEA Change Package, the purpose of the changes, and the progress in the NCEA change journey so school leaders can share these with their communities.
They have developed an infographic which has information about the dates and locations [PDF] for the regional roll out of Teacher Only Day, an outline of the six online modules that will be delivered through the Ministry’s Learning Management System, the resources they are preparing for these modules and what is required from your school.

Staff employed in alternative education centres, teen parent units and activity centres are expected to participate in Teacher Only Day programmes of their managing schools.
Further details and resource materials will be provided closer to the time. If you have any queries, email ncea.review@education.govt.nz

Update on implementing ‘Achieved endorsement’ and Resubmission of student work

In 2021, the “Achieved endorsement’ in level one subjects will be offered. Schools will need to inform NZQA of their level one course descriptions at the beginning of the year including the course Achievement standards being assessed. As with other NCEA level endorsements, the requirement is 14 credits with one external achievement standard (Physical Education credits will be internally assessed).

The MOE reconfirmed that resubmissions or clarifications of student work is only possible when initiated by teachers upon return of assessed work. The only time that this can occur will be when a student is on the border of ‘Not Achieved’ and ‘Achieved’. Although this is the current policy of NZQA, the MOE believes this is only loosely adhered to.
