2022 Student Award winners

Physical Education New Zealand is proud to announce the winners of the two student awards for 2022.

The Lady Joan Gillies Award recognises excellence in critical evaluation by a tertiary student on a physical education topic.

The 2022 winner is Hannah Stow, a second-year student at the University of Auckland, studying to be a Physical Education and Health teacher.

Hannah’s Physical Education is not solely about the “P in PE”

The reviewers noted it was An interesting and ongoing debate in Physical Education circles that continues the debate about the relevance of Physical Education in education today. Gives a range of perspectives (historical, cultural, social) about PE as an undervalued subject, that are supported with references and personal research.

The AS Lewis award recognises excellence in critical analysis by a secondary school student on a physical education topic.

The 2022 winner is Jake Coney, a Year 12 student from Tauranga Boys High School.

Jakes submitted a video for this award, titled How do we define sporting success in PE?

The reviewers noted:

It is good to see the use of video for this submission A nicely thought through presentation of challenges with Balance is Better and High-performance sport. Clipped video supported observations, and the use of experts provided further evidence and support.  This is a good resource would be a useful provocation for students.
