Ngā Taonga Tākaro – A workshop with Harko Brown
Physical Education New Zealand is excited to host this one-day workshop with teacher and Māori games expert, Harko Brown, for Year 7-10 teachers in the Waikato region on Friday 4 November 2022.
This full day workshop will provide teachers with culturally responsive, practical and fun physical activities and games that will strengthen their connection with te ao Māori and kaupapa Māori, building confidence to develop meaningful Physical Education learning for their students.
Through a variety of Māori games we will address how important the role context plays in your HPE curriculum design. We will encourage critical reflection on current practices, both your own and your schools, when it comes to selecting the ‘how’ of student learning.
The day will delve into the role Hauora plays in taonga tākaro, and its importance as an underlying concept in the HPE curriculum. Activities will acknowledge and develop awareness of your own hauora and how you can connect and strengthen the hauora of your students through explicit teaching in your physical education teaching programmes.
Discounted copies of Harkos’ books Ira Tākaro: Rethinking Health, Sport & Education in Aotearoa / NZ and Ngā taonga tākaro. II, The matrix will be available to buy/order.
