Whats on top?

A series of short interviews with physical educators who share their thoughts on teaching, education, and leadership as they move towards the implementation of the NCEA change package.

Kylie Thompson, Lecturer at AUT and SEG member for Physical Education

Kylie is well aware of the amount of the mahi connected to the NCEA change package, having both interest and influence in this space as a teacher educator and member of the Physical Education Subject Expert Group. For Kylie, movement as a context for learning should offer explicit opportunities for students to explore ‘In’, ‘Through’ and ‘About’ movement as they develop skills, capabilities and dispositions. Learning ‘Through’ movement is of particular interest to Kylie whose PhD research explores socio-emotional capabilities, and she also notes how the SEG has been able to include an Achievement Standard that fits with this learning as well.

In this clip, Kylie encourages us to keep movement at the front and centre of learning in Physical Education programme design, as we move towards embracing the NCEA change package.

How can your programmes be improved by explicit teaching and learning ‘through’ movement/physical activity?
