A series of short interviews with physical educators who share their thoughts on teaching, education, and leadership as they move towards the implementation of the NCEA change package.

Joel Hammond- HOF HPE Riccarton High School

An experienced teacher and previous dean, Joel has embraced his new appointment as HOF HPE at Riccarton High School with enthusiasm. Joel is leading his team towards the introduction of the NCEA change package with his eye on all aspects of what the Big Ideas could look like in a revised level one programme. In order to complement the two te Ao Kori movement contexts in the junior programme, the PE department is actively looking for ways to ensure both Te Ao Māori and Mātauranga Māori will spiral through both junior and senior courses.

With a view to keeping this task managable, Joel talks about how he sees the teacher’s role in acknowledging more than a single world view.

Take a look at this video and perhaps create time for open discussion in your department- what you are planning to do to celebrate the place of Mātauranga Māori and Te Ao Māori in your programmes?
